Self-love is a subject that everyone can talk about in length because it is an easy conversational topic . There are numerous articles, videos and advice from experts on the subject. However, despite the information out there, some still struggle to understand the true meaning of Self- Love. When this subject is mentioned you can often hear people saying, “ You have to love yourself more”. “ Before you can truly love someone, you have to love you”. "Self-love is needed for survival". These are all good advice but what does self-love really mean ?
Self- Love is the deep appreciation of one's worth or virtue. It is not about the way you look after a spa day but more about the way you feel. Having an appreciation for yourself, goes deep into who you are as a person, your skills and talents, how you were created and the values you express to yourself. Sometimes self-love can be mistaken for narcissism, although its not. Narcissism is a personality disorder in which a person becomes self-centered, arrogant, shows lack of empathy or consideration for other, and an excessive need for admiration. Self- love is the total opposite, when you hear self-love you should always think about having a deep regard for one’s happiness and well-being.
How can someone experience self-love? There are many different ways, however, its begins with being intentional. If you really want to change the way you love yourself, you have to become intentional about it. What do I mean by being intentional? Self-Love is an act taken by yourself, so you have to be willing to act accordingly in order to experience it. It’s your responsibility to ensure that you create routines or habits that contribute to your wellbeing.
Within the last 3 years, I have been practicing Five (5) self-loving duties that I would like to share with you:
1. Speak positively about yourself.
2. Take care of your body and mind.
3. Protect yourself from negative people and environments.
4. Forgive yourself and others.
5. Learn new things.
These are just a few self-loving approaches you can take but it requires commitment and dedication. Everyone that truly loves themselves, takes care of their selves. One does not go without the other. You are the only version of yourself and taking care of that version is paramount to your well-being and success in life.
